Research shows that health illiteracy affects everyone. However, those who face the most challenges have low literacy skills, language barriers, are elderly and/or
poor.
In response to the need for learners to improve
their health literacy, the Georgia Adult Education Health Literacy
Toolkit was developed to provide information and resources to help adult education instructors and administrators…
¨ better understand the problem of health literacy
and its affect on learners.
¨ develop and implement creative approaches
to help learners increase health literacy skills through adult education instruction.
¨ develop partnerships between literacy and
healthcare organizations.
Adult Education practitioners are not expected
to teach health content. However, a goal of the Office of Adult Education is to infuse
health related content into the curriculum. This toolkit is designed to assist practitioners in meeting this goal.
The Health Literacy Toolkit is divided into
4 sections and comprised of…
¨ professional development opportunities,
¨ lesson plans,
¨ resources, and
¨ health literacy projects.
